Pulse Reverse Osmosis

Pulse reverse osmosis (PRO)5,6 has been suggested as an updated mechanism of fluid balance and exchange which incorporates pore size effects and pulsatility. This theory suggests that fluid balance is achieved when the MOP and mean pulsatlie capillary blood pressure are equal and opposite all the way down the capillary. Fluid exchange is driven by the pulsing of the blood pressure above and below this mean (fig 8).

PRO suggests that fluid balance is achieved when the mean capillary pressure is equal and opposite to the membrane osmotic pressure. During the systolic phase of the pulse wave the capillary pressure exceeds the membrane osmotic pressure resulting in fluid movement out of the capillary. During diastole the membrane osmotic pressure exceeds the capillary pressure resulting in fluid being drawn back into the capillary.
