Osmolality is the measurement of the number of particles in a solution. This is essential in the design of injections and infusions. Solutions that have an osmolality that is too high or too low can be dangerous.

Changes in osmolality can be used as guide to the rate of breakdown of a substance in solution and is therefore used in stability testing.

At the Osmosis Unit Samples are analysed according to the USP using freezing point depression recommendations. The instrument used is an Advanced 3300 cryoscopic osmometer. The accuracy is in the region of =/- 1 milliosmol/kg.

Pharmaceutical and clinical samples can be measured.
